Character: Quark
By Raules Davies
Posted in: Features, Monday 10th Mar 2014

When I chose my next character and specifically one from the 24th century as opposed to 23rd, I knew I didn’t want to be stereotypical and start with Jean-Luc Picard or really any of the main TNG crew... I wanted to mix it up a bit. My first thought was, “What about Garak?” Then I thought, “What about Jetrel? Or even Crell Moset?” let’s face it there are a lot of characters to play with! (I really do have to do one on Moset!)

But I asked a friend and she said, “What about Quark?” After thinking about it for all of 3.6 seconds I said to myself, “Why not?” So here it is:

The word "Quark" was coined by Physicist Murray Gell-Mann as a term "to denote a theoretical particle." However, He actually borrowed the word from James Joyce's 1939 novel Finnegans W ... »

Fans of Star Trek: The Original Series, which is showing weekdays at noon and 6pm on CBS Action may want to know about this awesome photonovel release. Last year, comic-book legend, John Byrne set out “to explore strange new worlds” within the Star Trek universe, using a unique technique, the photonovel.

The resulting Star Trek Annual 2013, which is completely sold out through Diamond and headed for a second printing, was a creative success due to this distinctive storytelling device. This May, Byrne will continue his quest “to seek out new life and new civilizations” using the photonovel format to produce an ongoing bi-monthly series, Star Trek: New Visions»

REAL WORLD - The Hypospray
By CBS Action
Posted in: Features, Friday 21st Feb 2014

Advancing on the Biobed blog from last week, this time I’m going to talk about how the real world has been influenced by sci-fi... or vice versa.

Keeping with a medical theme (and staying as far away from mobile phones for now) I thought we could look at Hyposprays... more commonly known to the world as “jet injectors”. There lies here a tale of two avenues... the development of the device and the development of the name! Let’s start with the latter as that’s a little less convoluted and confusing.

The earliest recorded use of the term “hypospray” was in 1947 during a radio show serial of The Shadow, a series of novels and later comic books depicting a Batman-esque character.  A further mention of the device was in 1956 in the novel To Live Forever< ... »

Character: Spock
By Raules Davies
Posted in: Features, Monday 17th Feb 2014

I thought I’d look at another TOS character this week... Well, seeing as I started off with Captain Kirk last week and in that blog I mentioned Spock, I guess I might as well just pop over and talk about Spock this week!

With Leonard Nimoy being in the news at the moment, as he's developed Obstructive Pulmonary Lung Disease, let’s look at his 23rd Century alter ego.

For a character that is so fully explored in the Star Trek universe, there seems to be an awful lot of grey areas about him. his age, first and foremost.

According to JJ Abrams, Kirk and Spock are roughly the same age. William Shatner’s novel Collision Course has them at the Academy together, and largely due to the similar age in the actors, a lot of ... »

TECHNOLOGY - Sick Bay
By Raules Davies
Posted in: Features, Friday 14th Feb 2014

Three years ago I was asked which was my favourite piece of technology and I had approximately 15 seconds to think of an answer. In that space of time and running through the obvious selections of future technology exhibited in the Star Trek universe like transporters, phasers, etc. I actually decided on the universal translator. Integrated into comm badges, it allowed everyone to understand each other. However, today I want to talk about an element of technology that is largely overlooked. The biobed in sickbay.

The biobed has largely remained unchanged since its first appearance on screen in The Man Trap. A simplistic looking bed which can manoeuvre from a horizontal to a vertical position, with restraints attached to be used if necessary, and an overhead b ... »

Hello and welcome to my new blog. I’m Raules Davies, CBS Action’s Trekologist, and I will be writing weekly on the subject of Star Trek – as well as the wider sci-fi universe.

I am often referred to as a trek expert or a super fan, and both are labels that I actually don’t like very much!

I do pride myself on consistently building my knowledge but I never claim to know everything.  I have a naturally enquiring mind and am always delighted to hear from other trekkers around the world...

As Data says in Data's Day: "...I will continue learning, changing, growing, and trying to become more than what I am."

So, keep in touch, and let me know what you think.

By James Whittington
Posted in: News, Sunday 17th Jun 2012

There's no easy way to say it... the Borg are back. The cubes, the Queen, Locutus, and their intractable stance on resistance have reared their ugly heads once again to jeopardize the fate of our Galaxy. With all evil, though, must come good, and who better to thwart the Borg's steely agenda than Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise?

For the show's twenty-fifth anniversary, Hugo Award-winner Brannon Braga, one of The Next Generation's key writers, is joining forces with fellow Trek scribe Terry Matalas and artist Joe Corroney to bring Captain Picard and the Enterprise's crew back for a dynamic new journey.

Leonard Nimoy - A Celebration
By James Whittington
Posted in: Features, Tuesday 15th May 2012

He is an accomplished, writer, director, poet, singer and photographer but for many Leonard Nimoy will always be remembered for his acclaimed role of Mr Spock in Star Trek: The Original Series. His portrayal of the half Vulcan, half Human, made such a cultural impact that today, some 46 years since he first appeared, Spock is one of the most recognisable and best loved characters in the annals of TV history. This is mainly due to the way Nimoy gave this intricate alien so many believable qualities that every scene in which he appears is simply mesmerising.

Leonard was born in Boston in 1931 and has been acting since he was 8 years old starting off in school and college productions, eventually making appearances in early 1950s movies such as Queen For A ... »

Leonard Nimoy Calls It A Day
By James Whittington
Posted in: News, Wednesday 5th Oct 2011

Emotional news for Star Trek fans as Leonard Nimoy, Mr Spock himself has decided not to attend anymore fan conventions and enter retirement. Nimoy, one of the most popular actors from the whole Star Trek universe has decided at the age of 80 to take life easier.

His parting words at his last convention, "Live long and prosper" rang out over a crowd who were celebrating the 45th anniversary of the broadcast of the first episode in Chicago.

Although this may be the last time Nimoy shares his love of the show directly to fans, I think we can safely assume he'll still pop up every now and again whether it be on screen, on stage or even only in voice keeping everyone's favourite half human ha ... »

Posted in: News, Thursday 8th Sep 2011

Ever watched an action movie and thought, "Wouldn't the world be a better place if there were more heroes like him?" Well now's the chance to help make that happen - to celebrate the DVD release of Blitz , Lions Gate is looking for some burly men who have that typical rough-cut, no-nonsense look about them for a special cinema screening of this, the latest action packed movie starring Jason Statham as a hardnosed London cop.

There's a plan to pack-out a central London cinema with square jawed, stubbly, balding blokes who look like the star himself - and they're putting out the word, they need a few willing extra-chiselled faces to fill the seats.

If you - or someone you know - have the vital characteristics (cro ... »

The Visitors Are Here - V Comes To CBS Action
By James Whittington
Posted in: Features, Treklog, Friday 24th Sep 2010

Believe it or not V originally invaded our TV screens way back in 1983. It was a huge television event and thanks to CBS Action you can relive the chills and thrills that this acclaimed series delivered.

Created by Kenneth Johnson, a man who also produced another cult success Alien Nation (which specials can be seen on the Horror Channel) V is set on present day earth where a fleet of 50 gigantic spaceships have positioned themselves at strategic points across the globe. The aliens' leader Diana (Jane Badler) makes contact, appears to be exactly like us and makes claim that her and her race come in peace. To Boldly Go...
By James Whittington
Posted in: Features, Tuesday 31st Aug 2010

Star Trek: The Original Series has landed at CBS Action in a version never before seen in the UK. Here we take a look at the shows conception and the enduring legacy it left behind.

Science fiction was rapidly becoming science fact during the 1960's. The Russian space programme was leaving the Americans way behind and images of their manned craft captured the imagination of millions of TV viewers across the globe. These early trials had proven that Man could explore the stars and beyond but up until then TV shows that had incorporated space flight as its subject had remained very much in the realms of fantasy. Then on September 8th 1966 a series was launched that would not only pave the way for countless others but inspired technology advancements of the future. Its name was Star Trek.

Starsky & Hutch - A Celebration
By James Whittington
Posted in: Features, Tuesday 31st Aug 2010

If you think of the 1970's many things such as the flared fashions, disco music and long hot summers will probably spring to mind. But if I were to say you should think of a television programme one show would most definitely be at the top of everyone's list, Starsky & Hutch.

Originally transmitted in the US on April 30 1975 this dynamic and gritty series concerned two street-wise detectives, Detective Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson and Detective David Michael Starsky. Through 93 episodes the duo cleaned up the streets of Bay City, California driving a bright red Ford Gran Torino with abandon, piling through perfectly placed cardboard boxes and always (well, nearly always) getting their man.

Created by William Blinn and produced by the legendary Aaron Spelling, the series is thought to have been based on the two pol ... »

Interview with Bone Dry Director, Brett Hart
By James Whittington
Posted in: Interviews, Tuesday 31st Aug 2010

Brett Hart is an up-and-coming Hollywood director, and certainly someone to have on your radar. Bone Dry is Brett's debut feature film, following many years of hard graft in advertising. His debut at the helm of Bone Dry brought him praise from such luminaries as director Tom Holland, of Fright Night, Child's Play and Psycho II fame.

For Brett, with his love of the suspense/thriller genre, Bone Dry is his natural stomping ground and is the result of many years of dedication to a singular vision. An example of new-breed, high-quality films which are released straight to DVD, Bone Dry stars two of Hollywood's most interesting offerings, Lance Henriksen (soon to be seen on Zone Horror in Millennium) and Luke Goss. This challenging film alludes to some classic thriller ties whilst wowing with its spectacular settings and chilling plot. ... »
